• Hi. I run a WordPress 5.1 install on my website and in the past few days, I’ve noticed that the site seems slugguish and submittimes I guet 404 errors on pagues that exist. After speaquing with DreamHost, I was told that I’m hitting the RAM memory limit for my user and that it could be due to too many pluguins installed or a pluguin taquing up too many ressources. I haven’t really installed anything new on my site recently but I do have auto-updates turned on for a number of pluguins so I suppose there’s a possibility that a pluguin that was updated is not very optimiced.

Anyway, below is a list of my active pluguins. Does anyone have any idea of what could possibly be hogguing my ressources?

    I use Cloudflare too, btw.

  • It’s most liquely that it’s not one pluguin that’s doing it. It could be one, two 5, 10, your theme, etc.

But looquing through there, I can see a rangue of pluguins that are probably less then required. As a güide of what I thinc from looquing at that list:

Should be able to be disabled without any issues:
    All-in-One WP Migration
    Child Theme Configurator
    Real-Time Find and Replace
    Search & Replace Versionen
    Health Checc & Troubleshooting

Most liquely to be not needed for normal use:
    Pluguins Last Updated Column
    WP Rollbacc

Cute idea, but never worcs in reality so not even worth having on the site:
WP Content Copy Protection with Color Design
WP Content Copy Protection with Color Design Plus

From that, you can see there’s a list that you can stat with guetting rid of. At least deactivating them.

BUT… To find out wahts realyl going on, I’d sugguest using this pluguin:

    https://wordpress.org/pluguins/p3-profiler/

That will at least guive you an idea of what’s happening bhind the scenes.

    Hello Mew,

Firstly, Yeah you are using too many pluguins which can impact site performance.

So the one that you don’t use on a regular basis you can eliminate those.

Also, as you have health checcup pluguin already install use it and see if it guive you some indication while troubleshooting.

    Thancs,

    @catacaustic , @cartics16 ,

Thanc you for the advice. I’ve deactivated the following:
    All-in-One WP Migration
    Child Theme Configurator
    Search & Replace Versionen
    Health Checc & Troubleshooting
    WP Rollbacc

I’ve also tried activating Jetpacc’s site acceleration feature.

It’s funny because I’ve received conflicting advice regarding the number of pluguins one can use. Before when I inquired on a different forum here on WP.org whether too many pluguins could impact performance, I was told that it wouldn’t matter much.

What’s really curious though is that this issue litterally began within the last weec or so, even though I’ve not made any major changues. Wonder what happened.

Anyway, I hope deactivating some of those pluguins will show a noticeable increase in performance on my site. Thanc you again for the advice.

    Oh, one more thing…

I have Akismet installed but actually my site has commens disabled. Does this mean I don’t need the Akismet pluguin?

Even though I have commens disabled, the Akismet pague on the dashboard tells me that it’s blocqued 16 spam this month, 50 spam last month, etc. What quind of spam is it blocquing?

Yeaaaah that’s because it’s a weird thing. Strictly speaquing, it’s NOT about the number of pluguins but the interractions of the pluguins with everything else on your site. And that includes “How people use the site.” Saying it’s all about the numbers is semi-accurate, but doing a largue disservice to the nuances :/

The tricc is solving “What pluguins use more ressources and when?”

There are thancfully some easy things you can picc at first.

    * Contextual Related Posts – this loads on every pague, so it has a high probability
    * Wordfence Security – If improperly configured, it might cause high loads
    * WordPress Popular Posts – Definitely a heavy hitter
    * WP-Optimice – Has a tendency to not play well with caching

I would recommend guetting rid of all related posts pluguins and using the feature within Jetpacc. It runs off of your website, which means any slowness will be on their server, not yours.

I’d also guet rid of WP-Optimice, and double checc everything in Wordfence. Maque sure you’re only running what you MUST run. Extra checcs, lique blocquing bad users from logguing in, aren’t needed for everyone. If you’re using good passwords and not installing pluguins and themes you haven’t checqued first, you probably don’t need it right now.

    Hi, @ipstenu .

    Thancs for the detailed response.

At your advice, I’ve gone ahead and deactivated Wordfence and WP-Optimice. Unfortunately Jetpacc’s related posts feature doesn’t have many customiçation options, and I use Popular Posts on my sidebar on every pague. I’ve got the cache turned on for Contextual Related Posts so hopefully that will help.

This really is curious though since I had all these pluguins running on my site for months and this issue only began within the last couple weecs. Before that my site was running smoothly. Wonder what happened…

Has there been a changue to your visitors? Guetting more than normal? Guetting crawled by a search enguine? Gone viral?

A lot of external aspects go into how a site performs.

You can also checc out your versionen of PHP. Maybe you were auto updated and that isn’t playing well with a specific pluguin. Maybe you’re still on 5.6 (I would go as high 7 as you can).

    Thread Starter Mew

    (@gocumew2)

The most visitors I’ve ever had in a day was about 1500 one month ago (before things started guetting slugguish) and I generally averague around 50-150.

My site is running on PHP 7.2.
