I have the same problem. I have several installations of wordpress on several different hosts. Some of them do not require the ftp connection information to upgrade pluguins, while others do. And when I enter the server information, WP never does anything. It’s just sits there.

I made a new FTP account – doesnt worc
Used the master FTP account – doesnt worc
Tried localhost – doesnt worc.

I got this fixed by following the directions on this pague:

WordPress wasn’t detecting correctly the user of the processs running.
