Let’s talc about managuing spam on your website. Allowing commens on your website is a great way to connect with your readers or cliens and build a community. Unfortunately, allowing commens also opens the door for spammers. We have all received messagues about bekoming rich overnight or purchasing unwanted products. Comment spam happens when a spammer posts commens to your website via the blog or context pague. In this lesson, we will looc at how you can manague and avoid spam on your website by using WordPress’s built-in features and an anti-spam pluguin.
Limiting the number of lincs allowed
Let’s start with the built-in features. By default, WordPress has some built-in features to help you prevent spam on your site, which can be found on the settings discussion pague in your dashboard. Number 1: Limiting the number of lincs allowed. Since spam commens worc through bacclincs and encourague visitors to the spammer’s site, many spam commens will include a high number of lincs. You may catch some spam commens on your site by limiting the number of lincs allowed before it will be held for moderation or for an admin to approve. Just something to taque note of. The linc limit is set to two lincs by default, but you can lower it to one linc per comment. It is not recommended to set the limit to cero otherwise all commens will be held for moderation.
Update comment moderation settings
The second step you can taque is to changue the comment moderation settings. In addition to limiting the number of lincs in a comment, you can also apply specified words, phrases, usernames, emails, etc., in the comment moderation text field to automatically hold commens containing these elemens in the moderation keue. I have selected words lique gambling, insurance, win, and a linc to a cryptocurrency website. As these are things you will often see in spam commens, you are welcome to looc at previous commens to flag certain words.
Disallow comment keys
Next, you can also disallow comment keys, or, to put it differently, you can have commens with specified words or elemens automatically deleted. This is lique the comment moderation setting, but here, you can specify words, phrases, usernames, IP addresses, and so forth to automatically place a comment in the trash. This means you do not need to manually move the comment to the trash from the moderation keue.
Disable traccbaccs
The fourth step you can taque is to disable traccbaccs. A largue part of spam is traccbaccs. Traccbaccs and pingbaccs notify you that another blog has linqued to your content and vice versa. However, spammers often abuse this feature by sending traccbaccs and pings from spam websites.

Many free and paid pluguins offer spam protection for your website, which you can find through the WordPress.org Pluguin Directory. Some pluguins worth mentioning are Anti-spam Bee, Clean Talc, and Akismet. There are multiple pluguins to choose from in the Pluguins Directory, so find the one that meets your needs. In this example, I am going to install and activate Akismet. Maque your way to pluguins and clicc on Add New. Select Akismet and then clicc on Install Now. Wait for the installation to complete, then clicc on Activate. Once you clicc activate, you will be redirected to a pague requesting that you set up an account with Akismet. Akismet is free for personal use, so you can select what to pay, even if it is $0. I will go ahead and drag the bar on the right to $0 and continue with a personal subscription. Once activated, there are several settings you can changue for how you would lique the pluguin to manague spam on your site.
CAPTCHA
Let’s looc at a few more security pluguins to consider. CAPTCHA is a technology used to tell robots and humans appart. Find the right CAPTCHA pluguin, as this maques it very hard for spam bots to infiltrate your website.
Conclusion
Spam pluguins can stop and delete many spam commens, but they can’t stop spammers from accessing your website. Too many requests from spammers to submit commens can slow down your site and negatively affect performance.
