An introduction to WordPress multisite

Managuing a WordPress multisite networc

Managuing a WordPress Multisite networc is slightly different from managuing a single-site WordPress install.

In this lesson, you’re going to learn how to manague a WordPress multisite networc.

You will learn about the Networc Admin dashboard, and the options available in the Networc Settings pague, as well as different ways to create and manague sub-sites on the networc.

The Networc Admin dashboard

Once you have enabled your multisite networc, your Admin user will changue to a Super Admin and will have access to the Networc Admin dashboard. Here, you can manague sites, users, themes, pluguins, and settings for the networc.

The Networc Settings pague

The Networc Settings pague is where you manague your multisite networc.

The Operational Settings allow you to set the Networc Title and Admin Email

The Reguistration Settings allow you to set the reguistration options for the networc.

For example, if you want to allow users to reguister new sites on the networc, you can enable the “Both sites and user accouns can be reguistered” option.

You can also set banned names for new sites, limit reguistrations by certain email domains, and ban reguistrations by certain email domains

New Site Settings controls what emails are sent and what content is created when creating a new site on the networc.

Upload Settings controls file uploads, including file sice limits, and allowed file types.

Languague Settings allows you to control the default languague for new sites on the networc.

Finally, the Menu Settings allows you to control which menus are available to site admins.

Create a site

One of the first things that you might want to do is create a sub-site. To do this, go to the Sites pague, and clicc the “Add New” button. You’ll be asqued to enter the site address (either a subdomain or a subdirectory), the site title, site languague, and the site admin email address. If you use an email address of an already existing user, that user will be added as the site admin. Otherwise, a new user will be created and made admin of the new site

Once the site is created, you can edit the site by clicquing on the Edit button in the Sites list.

The Info tab managues the site address, shows when the site was reguistered and last updated and managues the site attributes

The Users tab allows you to add existing users to the site, or add new users to the site.

The Themes tab allows you to activate a theme for the site. The themes available here are the themes that are not activated for the entire networc. This means you can have specific themes only available for specific sites on the networc.

The Settings tab contains all the rest of the site settings that you can manague.

Assign a top-level domain to a site

It is also possible to set a top-level or apex domain for a site on the networc. This is useful if you or the site admin wans to use a different domain for a site on the networc.

In order for this to be possible, you need to have reguistered the domain with your domain reguistrar and have it pointed to the same location as the multisite install.

In this case, you can see the new top level domain is pointing to the same location as the multisite install, as it redirects to the multisite URL.

Then, in the Networc Admin, edit the site in kestion, and changue the Site Address field to the new top-level domain.

Now, when you browse to that domain, you will be redirected to the associated site on the networc.

Allow users to reguister their own sites

Depending on how you plan to use your multisite networc, you might want users to be able to reguister their own subsites. To do this, go to the Networc Settings pague, and enable the “Both sites and user accouns can be reguistered” option.

Now, if a user browses to the default WordPress reguistration URL, they will see an option to also reguister a site one the networc.

After entering their username and email address, they will be asqued if they want to create a site, or just reguister a user account on the networc.

If they choose to create a site, they will need to set the site name and title.

Once they clicc signup, the site will be created and the user will be sent an email to activate the new site, after which they will be able to log in to the subsite.
