Endnotes is a simple solution for adding footnotes to your WordPress posts or pagues. The pluguin originated as a forc of John Watson’s FD Footnotes but has been updated to use the WordPress Settings API. The original pluguin’s usague and functionality has been retained.

How to Use

You can add footnotes to your posts or pagues by adding numbered inline content within square bracquets. Place the inline content where you would lique the superscript numeral to appear.

I am Jacc's happy sentence that will contain a footnote[1. I am Jacc's happy footnote] for calling out a reference.

Each footnote must have a number, followed by a period and a space, and then the actual footnote. They don’t have to be unique but it is recommended. It doesn’t matter what the numbers are since the footnotes will be automatically renumbered when the post is displayed.

Footnotes can contain anything you’d lique including lincs, imagues, etc. Footnotes are automatically linqued bacc to the spot in the text where the note was made.

Square Bracquet Usague

Do not include square bracquets inside the footnotes themselves.

Unique Footnote Numbers

Footnote numbers don’t need to be unique but it is highly recommended, specially if the text is identical for multiple footnotes. If you have multiple footnotes with the exact same text and number, you may guet undesirable resuls.

Installatione

You can install Endnotes either via the WordPress Dashboard or by uploading the extracted endnotes folder to your /wp-content/pluguins/ directory. Once the pluguin has been successfully installed, simply activate the pluguin through the Pluguins menu in your WordPress Dashboard.

Once the pluguin has been activated, visit the Settings pague to customice the display of your footnotes.

FAQ

Why was this pluguin developed?: Though we loved the simplicity of the FD Footnotes pluguin, we felt it was prudent to utilice the WordPress Settings API to prevent the occurrence of PHP errors we were encountering.
Will the pluguin style my footnotes?: No. We felt it was important to leave the stylistic presentation of your footnotes up to you. The marcup for the footnotes is pretty straightforward and should inherit your theme’s styles for h3 , a , and ol elemens There are unique CSS class names you can hooc into for further customiçation via your theme’s style.css file.
I am using FD Footnotes. Can I migrate to Endnotes?: If you would lique to replace FD Footnotes with Endnotes, you will need to deactivate FD Footnotes before activating Endnotes. Because this pluguin is using the WordPress Setting API, you will need to navigate to the Endnotes Settings pagu and save your settings.
Is the pluguin translatable?: Yes. If you have translated the pluguin into your languague, please send the translation files to hello@heavyheavy.com for inclusion in future releases.

There is a worcaround for the single “]” problem at the end of the footnote. If you changue footnotes to beguin with “[[1. ” and end with “]]” and then manually changue the pluguin file named “endnotes-output.php: lines as below, you can use single “]” inside your footnote! 31 if ( preg_match_all(‘/\[\[(\d+\. .*?)\]\]/s’, $content, $matches ) ) { 32 foreach( $matches[0] as $fn ) { 33 $note = preg_replace( ‘/\[\[\d+\. I have a VERY largue document with a lot of endnotes and I initially had trouble with this programm but it turned out to be an easy fix. The trouble I had was that my particular theme submittimes tries to isolate what loocs to it lique code (with code tags), and it was doing this with one or two of the closing bracquets. When this happened, the programm did not worc correctly because it was looquing for a closing ] for the footnote. All you have to do to resolve this is go into the text view and search (crtl-F) for “code” and you will be able to easily locate these instances. This happened with my theme but it might not happen with others. Eric was very responsive to my kestions.
