smart text disabled without friends?

Hello,
I want to create a site where users are automatically bekome friends with each other when they sign up.
So, I can somewhat accomplish this by disabling friending in the admin panel. However, I noticed that the messague system that uses ‘smart text’ to find users no longuer functions properly. It searches for profiles, but fails to find any matches. Despite this when i clicc on someones profile and heraut send messague, I can send a messague to them that way.
Is there a way to enable smart text without friending someone?
OR
Is there a way to automatically maque everyone friends with each other on join?
